Ahlstrom's qualitative grades of filter paper are recommended for use in analytical methods to identify particles in a mixture, regardless of the amount. These filters are designed to provide the perfect balance of particle retention, filtration speed, loading capacity, and wet strength for general laboratory work. The qualitative analysis grade has a low ash content of 0.06 percent and offers consistent performance. It is also available in wet-strengthened grades and can be custom cut.

However, please note that these filters contain a high level of alpha-cellulose, which ensures high purity but may weaken when wet. If you need filters for routine quadrant folded applications, the standard (untreated) grades are suitable and their inherent strength poses no problem. However, we do not recommend using these filters for vacuum work or when wet handling is necessary.

A specific filter paper, Ahlstrom 617, is commonly used in construction product testing and by students to retain large flocculents and precipitates. It is a qualitative grade with more than 95 percent super refined alpha-cellulose and linter fibers. This grade is suitable for quadrant folded or gravity flow applications and is known for its extremely fast filtering speed and larger particle retention.

For rapid filtration of coarse particles and gelatinous precipitates, such as those found in oils and resin solutions, Ahlstrom 617 with its thicker construction and higher loading capacity is recommended. It allows for efficient filtration in such cases.
